Get ready for Salt Awareness Week

Help to lower the nation’s blood pressure, spread the word about salt and set up an awareness-raising event

Published:

Every year, health charity Consensus Action on Salt & Health make headlines with their Salt Awareness Week, aiming to lower the nation’s salt intake and, with it, our blood pressure.

This year’s event, taking place between 12-18 March, will focus on families, and how we’re all eating too much salt. Many people think that eating too much salt is only a cause for concern in our later years, but eating too much salt during childhood raises blood pressure, which then tracks into adulthood and later life, raising the risk of strokes and heart attacks. That’s why it’s so important for families to reduce their salt intake across the generations.

You can help save lives

You can play a part in preventing countless unnecessary heart attacks and strokes by setting up an awareness-raising stand in your local GP surgery, pharmacy, library, workplace or leisure centre.

This year’s resources include:

  • an eye-catching poster
  • a leaflet explaining the effects of salt on the health of our children
  • a low salt shopping guide
  • a leaflet introducing FoodSwitch, an app which allows you to find healthier food options simply by scanning the bar code.

Look out for stories about Salt Awareness Week in the media in March. You could even help spread the word and tell your friends and family about the effect salt has on blood pressure.
