Blood Pressure UK is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Professor Graham MacGregor, a world-leading physician, hypertension researcher, and tireless public health campaigner.
Professor MacGregor dedicated his career to understanding and preventing high blood pressure, translating scientific evidence into practical strategies that improved the lives of patients. Through his work with Blood Pressure UK, he helped educate patients about the dangers of excess salt and sugar, offering practical advice on how to reduce their intake, monitor blood pressure, and adopt healthier lifestyles. He championed accessible patient resources, community engagement, and campaigns that empowered people to take control of their blood pressure.

Beyond patient education, he influenced national policy, including salt reduction targets for the food industry, which directly reduced population blood pressure, lowered the risk of strokes, heart attacks and kidney disease. He founded Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH), later creating World Action on Salt & Health (WASH) and Action on Sugar, ensuring that research translated into tangible health benefits for millions of people worldwide.
As former President of the British Hypertension Society (1999–2001), he also encouraged clinicians and researchers to focus on public health alongside clinical care, bridging the gap between science and everyday patient impact. His vision, energy, and determination left a far-reaching legacy, improving the health of patients both in the UK and internationally.
Blood Pressure UK extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and all those whose lives he improved. He will be remembered not only for his scientific brilliance but for his unwavering commitment to helping people live healthier lives.
For all of his tireless work and commitment we are immensely grateful.
