Fundraiser's inspiring journey for Blood Pressure UK

Unicycle 52 - cycling to every capital city across Europe!

Published:

In 2011, Steven Primrose-Smith, the man behind Unicycle 52, set himself the ambitious task of cycling to every capital city across Europe, in aid of three charities - one of which is Blood Pressure UK

As if a 31,000 kilometre bike ride wasn’t enough, Steven has also set out to complete 3 degree courses with the Open University, via his netbook, teaming up with fellow students en route.

After a nearly fatal brain-haemorrhage in 2009, caused by high blood pressure, Steven became aware of just how often high blood pressure goes undetected and how easily preventable it’s damaging effects are. High blood pressure has been labelled the ‘silent killer’ as, for the majority of people, it is entirely symptomless until it causes a potentially fatal stroke, heart disease or kidney failure.

Significantly, the end of Steven’s mission marks the start of the annual campaign - Know Your Numbers! - set up by Blood Pressure UK.  From 16th to 22nd September, Blood Pressure UK is running the nation’s largest annual blood pressure testing and awareness event, offering free blood pressure checks in supermarkets, pharmacies, workplaces, GP surgeries, hospitals, health clubs, leisure centres and shopping centres, across the UK.

Katharine Jenner, Chief Executive Officer at Blood Pressure UK comments, “We are thrilled Steven has completed this phenomenal challenge, despite nearly dying as a result of high blood pressure. Sadly, many others haven’t been so lucky. Early diagnosis of high blood pressure is vital, which is why Blood Pressure UK is offering free blood pressure checks around the country, as part of Know Your Numbers! Week”.
