Salt is a dangerous addiction, responsible for raising blood pressure - which can lead to strokes and heart attacks
On World Hypertension Day, TV Chef and Hell's Kitchen star Marco Pierre White declared: "We know salt is a killer. People suffer strokes and heart attacks as a result of too much salt."
Yet most adults in the UK are eating 50% more salt than is recommended every day, raising their blood pressure. Worldwide, high blood pressure causes:
- 62% of all strokes
- 49% of all heart attacks.
If everyone in the UK ate less than 6g of salt a day, then 20,000 more lives could be saved.
This site from UK charity, Blood Pressure UK, is stuffed full with practical ideas for cutting down on salt.
Blood Pressure UK has recently launched a new salt campaign. Please visit our salt campaign website, which has three main objectives:-
- To get supermarkets to stock more no and low salt food products.
- To ensure the government sets salt reduction targets beyond 2012.
- To ensure traffic light labeling is introduced for online food shopping.
