Get involved in Salt Awareness Week 2019
The 20th annual Salt Awareness Week will take place this March, and you could be part of it. Order your posters by 18 February
Salt Awareness Week is an annual campaign led by campaign group, Action on Salt. Their mission is to lower the nation’s salt intake to lower our blood pressure and our risk of heart disease and stroke. You could take part – find out more at the end of this page.
This year's event will take place from 4 – 10 March. As Action on Salt celebrate 20 years of campaigning, it’s a good time to reflect on progress made and look forward to the future and what still needs to be done to protect the health of the next generation.
The week will have the dual theme of taking action, and reducing the high levels of salt in children’s food in restaurants and takeaways. The theme was announced following recent reports showing that the food industry is dragging its heels in meeting salt reduction targets to lower the amount of salt added to food. In particular, it’s doing little to improve food served out of home, including their menus for children.
Mhairi Brown, Nutritionist at Action on Salt explains:
“The UK once led the world in salt reduction, achieving a reduction in salt intake and a corresponding drop in blood pressure, but due to lack of guidance from government, the food industry have now lost momentum. If we could reduce our salt intake by just 1 gram a day, we could save the NHS £1.5 billion in healthcare costs.”
Katharine Jenner, CEO of Blood Pressure UK and Action on Salt adds:
“When the salt reduction campaign first started, the Government and food industry took action, lowering our salt intakes by around a gram and a half. It might not sound like much but it’s enough to prevent an estimated 7,000 strokes and heart attacks every year. In recent years little progress has been made, now it’s time for the out of home sector to step up and take action.”
Take part, order posters by Monday 18 February
You can take part by asking pharmacists and health professionals in your area to set up a display to raise awareness and provide information on salt and health. Action on Salt have eye-catching posters and resources available to get the message out to passers-by. You can order resources from Action on Salt.
There are other ways you can take part too:
- write to food companies to ask for less salt in food
- write to your MP to ask for a more action on salt
- share your personal salt reduction strategy on social media #SaltAwarenessWeek2019 @actiononsalt
- encourage friends and family members to add less salt to food and to choose the lower salt option.
Hemini Bharadia, Marketing Manager at Blood Pressure UK explains how you can take action for yourself too:
“While it’s time for the food industry to do more, the good news is there’s action you can take for yourself as well. The first step is to know your blood pressure numbers by getting a blood pressure check. The second is to look for where you can make healthy changes to your lifestyle and what you eat. You can choose healthier restaurants and meals when you eat out, make healthy swaps when you shop and add less salt at home, and that’s just a start.”
