Salt - are you full of it?
"Are you full of it?" That is the question being asked on TV and computer screens, buses and radios across the UK.
"Full of what?" you may be asking. Salt is the answer.
The UK Food Standards Agency has launched a new range of TV, radio, online and poster adverts to get us all thinking about the amount of salt in our foods. Salt raises our blood pressure and this raises our risk of having a stroke or heart attack.
So, the less salt we eat, the better. In fact, we should all aim to eat less than 6g a day. Yet most of us eat roughly 9g a day.
The problem is that most of the salt we eat doesn't come the salt cellar in our kitchen. Only 20-25 per cent of our daily salt intake comes from what we add when cooking or at the table. The other 75-80 per cent is already there, 'hidden', in the foods we eat.
The new adverts will feature many of the "surprising" places that salt can be found: bread, pasta sauces, ketchup, soup and breakfast cereals. And the amount of salt in each food can vary massively, depending on the manufacturer. The only way to know much salt you are really eating is to read the food labels.
The TV ads, which feature comedian, writer and TV presenter Jenny Éclair, started on 5 October 2009 and will run for four weeks.
